In memory of

Private John S. D. Baigrie

18th Highland Light Infantry

†May 20th 1918, age 18

John Smith Davidson Baigrie was the younger son of William and Jane Baigrie.  Born on 7th September 1899 at Newbattle Dairy where his father was employed as an estate worker, John attended school at Inveresk leaving in 1914 with a Certificate of Merit.  In October 1917 he became the Assistant Scoutmaster at Inveresk.  John was called up early in 1918, enlisted at Glencorse and was sent to the front-line France in March 1918 where he was killed just a few weeks later.  Private Baigrie is buried in Martinsart British Cemetery.  This cemetery is unusual in that the headstones are made from red Corsehill or Locharbriggs sandstone rather than the more usual Portland stone.  John’s brother, William , was killed on 30th November, 1917
