William Hayton was the 5th son of George and Christina Hayton of Brownsland, Stobo. He attended Lyne Public School where he was remembered as a promising pupil with a loveable disposition.  He enlisted in the 1/8th Royal Scots in October 1914 and arrived in France in June 1915 where he spent the greater part of the war.  He was home on leave in January 1919 at his brother Richard’s home at Boghouse when he died as a result of an illness he had contracted in France.  He was 22 years old.  Private Hayton was buried with full military honours at Newlands Old Churchyard. William’s older brother James was killed in France in April 1917.
